Experts panel a shame - PM

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the people are ready to safeguard the country's sovereignty and face any challenges forced by outsiders. It is a shame to appoint a panel of experts against a sovereign nation, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said yesterday.

He was addressing a passing out ceremony where 100 cadet officers were commissioned after successfully completing their training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy at Diyathalawa.

Prime Minister Jayaratne said the country has always fought against enemies to protect the country.

The leadership and the courageous people defeated the three-decade terrorism. The country was liberated and people are living in harmony. Those who are promoting separatism and pointing fingers at Sri Lanka saying it is violating human rights should be ashamed, the Premier said.

Sri Lanka's Security Forces are an example to the world. "We can tell the world to learn a lesson from our troops," he said.

The Prime Minister said over 3,500 people were disabled by the war. "Many others were killed. The International Community did not notice these killings and civilians who were disabled by acts of terrorism. There is peace and harmony in the country now. After observing all the successful consequences, there are people keen on investigating war crimes against the country," he said.

He said appointing a panel of investigators is a shame.

"The President and the people are ready to face any challenges forced by outsiders. We will not fall apart at their feet. We will protect the sovereignty and integrity of the nation," he said.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya was also present at the commissioning parade.

The President's Award for the Best All-round Cadet Officer was won by Cadet Officer S.A.R.R. Prabath Kumar.
