An exhibition of oil paintings titled ‘(Sur) Realism’, by Laurens
Gerard will be held at Alliance française de Kandy from June 19 to 28
from 9 am to 6 pm. The opening ceremony will take place on June 18 at
6.30 pm.
Laurens is a Dutch National who was born in Delft, Holland. Frequent
visitor to Sri Lanka since 1977 and having become enchanted by the
island, he has been living here in recent years.
As a child, Laurens displayed a strong artistic talent but did not
pursue any formal art training. He quickly became entrenched in the
interior design business for some 35 years, producing hand drawn plans
for private clients, one of whom was the US Ambassador in The Hague,
Holland. Being handsomely rewarded for his work, he decided to retire
and revisit his earlier passion, oil painting.
Laurens works entirely in oil on canvas and in recent months his art
work as seen a veritable renaissance, having produced over 20 paintings
of various styles in less than eight months.
His painting style is strongly influenced by Salvador Dali and is
stimulated by images found within the media. From these he develops his
own ideas in an eclectic style, producing a range of fascinating
paintings with a wide range of personal appeal.
He has a noticeable preference for painting which depicts the human
form, including portraits.
