Five meet records and one equalled on final day

A total of five meet records were established and one equalled on the final day of the 53rd Junior National Athletics Championships 2010 which came to an end at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Diyagama, Homagama yesterday.

The three-day junior sports meet saw the fall of 15 records.

However on the final day, no athlete succeeded in reaching the qualifying standards of the 14th Junior Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam.

However, Airwoman Eranga Dulakshi earned qualifying standards to represent Sri Lanka at the Junior Asian meet when she finished the Under-20 Girls’ 3000 metres Steeplechase with a new record on the first day of the meet. Ananda College jumper Lakshan Koswatte cleared a distance of 7.3m in the U-20 Boys’ Long Jump and will be joining the Lankan team for Hanoi too.

U-16 Girls’: Nansi Ekanayake – Lyceum International School , Wattala (400m – 59.62secs.)

U-16 Boys’: P.M.G.M.P. Ratnayake – Trinity College, Kandy (Shot Putt – 14.85m)

U-18 Girls’: Akshana Maralande - Mahamaya Girls’ College (100m - 12.29 secs)

U-18 Boys’: H.E.M.I.G.I.M. Herath – A. Ratnayake Central College, Walala (400m – 50.06m)

U-20 Girls’: G.A.I.S. Dayananda – Ferguson High School, Ratnapura (100m – 12.46secs. )

U-20 Boys’: Lakshan Koswatte – Ananda College, Colombo (long Jump – 7.30m)

U-23 Girls’: J.A.N. Shashiprabha Jayasinghe – St. Joseph’s Balika, Kegalle (200m – 25.33 secs)

U-23 Boys’: Y.M.W.G.A.M. Gunaratne - Sri Lanka Air Force (400m - 47.94 secs.)

Best Long Jumper: Lakshan Koswatte – Ananda College, Colombo ( 7.30m)

Best Women’s Hurdler: L.D.N.G. Jayatilleke – Sumana Balika MV, Ratnapura (400m hurdles – 64.86 secs)

Thrower of the junior championships: D.S. Ranasinghe – Javelin Throw – 69.02m (New Meet Record)

Nilanthi Lanka of Ratnapura DAA (U-20 Girls’ 10000m 39:43.6 secs.)

R.A.C. Jayamini of Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura (U-18 Girls’ 1500m 4:44.66 secs.)

Nadeeshani Henderson of Gateway College, Rajagiriya (U-18 Girls’ 400m 57.03 secs.)

Y.M.W.G.A.M. Gunaratne of Sri Lanka Air Force (U-23 Boys’ 400m 47.94 secs.)
