Sunday, Poya tuition ban in Colombo?

Western Provincial Council member Jagath Kumara has moved a motion to ban tuition classes on Sundays and Poya days in the Western Province.

According to Kumara, religious and cultural background contribute largely to make the country a moral and pious society.

Tuition classes on Poya day has become obstacle for students attending Dhamma schools and engaging in religious activities, he said.

“There are criticism in our society for holding tuition classes during Dhamma school hours. Therefore, our Provincial Council should take action to ban tuition classes on Sunday and Poya days until 2.00pm,” he added.

Two Provincial Councils have already adopted a resolution to this effect, Kumara has requested Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to present this motion at council meeting tomorrow considering as an urgent matter.
