LG Electronics:

Leading the way to the digital era

LG Electronics was founded in 1958 as GoldStar, and in 1995 was renamed LG Electronics. Since then LG has led the way into the advanced digital era, thanks to the technological expertise acquired by manufacturing a range of innovative home appliances such as radios and TVs.

LG Electronics has unveiled many new products, applied new technologies in the form of mobile devices and digital TVs in the 21st century and continues to reinforce its status as a global company. The history of LG Electronics has always been surrounded by the company’s desire to create a happier, better life.

Since producing Korea’s first radios, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners way back in 1960, LG Electronics has today become a global giant in manufacturing innovative home appliances and electronic entertainment systems, with factories in many Asian and European countries, producing high-tech appliances to meet the ever increasing demand for its products in the global market.

Among the company’s many achievements are developing and introducing the world’s first CDMA digital mobile handsets and IC set for DTV in 1997, world’s first 60-inch Plasma TV in 1998, world’s first internet Refrigerator in 2000, world’s first internet washing machine, air conditioner, and microwave oven in 2002, world’s first 55” all-in-one LCD TV and 71” Plasma TV and world’s first Satellite- and Terrestrial-DMB handsets in 2005, and become one of the largest suppliers of mobile handsets worldwide.

The same year LG developed the world’s first 3G UMTS DMB handset, 3G-based DVB-Hand Media FLO DMB Phone with time-shift function and DMB notebook computer.

In 2006 LG Chocolate, the first model in LG’s Black Label series of premium handsets, sold 7.5 million units worldwide. LG also produced the first single-scan 60” HD PDP module and 100-inch LCD TV in 2007 and launched the industry’s first Dual-Format, High-Definition Disc Player and Drive and also 120Hz Full HD LCD TV. In 2007 LG demonstrated the world’s first MIMO 4G-Enabled technologies with 3G LTE and won the contract for GSMA’s 3G campaign.

Among LG’s recent achievements are inverter technology in air conditioners and refrigerators, low watt air conditioners, the world’s first door cooling refrigerator using Green Ion technology, SteamTromm washing machine - using steam technology for a softer cleaner wash and SolarDom - the future of microwave ovens.

Building on its expertise in health-oriented technology, LG launched its latest ground-breaking “Health Plus” campaign with the slogan “Caring for your health in every way” symbolizing its involvement in every aspect of home living, such as cooking, eating, clothing and keeping the home and environment clean.


SriLankan increases baggage allowance

For online passengers:

SriLankan Airlines is offering upto 30 kilos of free baggage allowance for all economy class passengers who check in to their flights through the Internet at www.srilankan.aero, 5 - 10 kilos more than their regular free baggage allowance!

SriLankan’s Worldwide Sales Head Mohamed Fazeel said, “We don’t want our customers to stand in queues any more, and we are encouraging them to avoid the hassle by checking in through the Internet. They can do this from their homes or offices, or even while on the go from their laptops and certain types of mobile phones”.

This allowance is offered especially for passengers travelling out of Colombo. Those holding Economy class tickets on flights to Europe, the Far East and the Middle East get 10 kg extra for a total of 30 kg, while passengers travelling to destinations in South Asia get five kg extra for a total of 25 kg.

Business Class passengers get 10 kg extra with a total of 40 kg on flights to any destination that SriLankan flies to including those in South Asia, Europe, the Far East and the Middle East.

The on-line check-in service opens 48 hours before a flight and closes two hours prior to scheduled departure. All passengers can also choose their own seats on board the aircraft when they check-in on-line, through the easy to use seating chart on the website. Seats that have already been reserved by other passengers are shown in a different colour.


HSBC launches PIB Lite

HSBC’s Personal Internet Banking service had enhanced customers convenience in using its Personal Internet Banking service, by launching the new “PIB Lite” feature.

The Personal Internet Banking Lite (PIB Lite) feature enhances customer convenience by allowing them to access their account on-line with the use of a password.

The electronic security token required currently by customers to access their internet banking service is no longer a mandatory requirement for all transactions.

Going forward customers will only require the token for high risk transactions and could perform their basic low risk transactions online with the use of a password only, without the need to constantly carry their token with them.

NTB conducts career guidance program in Jaffna

A career guidance workshop was conducted for students at the Jaffna University prior to the opening of Nations Trust Bank’s 40th branch.

The workshop was conducted by the human resources section of Nations Trust Bank in Tamil and English for the benefit of all the participants. A number of students from the university attended this program which was conducted free of charge.

Nations Trust Bank PLC Human Resources Head Ramanika Unamboowe said, “Nations Trust Bank has conducted many such workshops in the North and the East markets where we have expanded our services and Jaffna is no exception. Through this effort we hope to facilitate the youth to better acquaint themselves with information and techniques that will facilitate them in their career.

Delma Exchange opens branch

Delma Exchange has now opened its first branch in an Industrial Zone locality in Al Quoz and will cater to the remittances of expatriate’s workers of Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Philippines and Pakistan.

Delma Exchange, is owned by reputed Nationals of the region and Hatton National Bank Plc, Sri Lanka (HNB).


Aeturnum wins Microsoft award

Aeturnum Inc was awarded the ‘FAST Innovative Solution Award’ at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference held in Las Vegas, USA.

The occupational health and safety management systems of Logiwiz Limited have been certified with the Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services 18001:2007 (OHSAS) certification by SGS Soci‚t‚ G‚n‚rale de Surveillance.

Obtaining OHSAS confirms that Logiwiz demonstrates a commitment to implement, maintain and improve the way in which it manages its occupational health and safety systems. “This will facilitate the integration of quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems in the organization, promoting sustainability,” Hayleys Advantis Managing Director Omar Raban said.
