National Nutrition Month
June has been named the National Nutrition Month by the Nutrition
Coordinating Unit of the Health Department to create a healthy and
productive nation in Sri Lanka. Health Ministry Nutrition Co-ordinating
Unit Director Specialist Doctor Community Health Shanthi Gunawardene
said activities of the Nutrition Month will be carried out aiming youth
on the theme 'Proper youth nutrition for the future progress of the
country'.
Dr. Shanthi Gunawardene said a person's physical, social,
bio-chemical changes take place and intelligence and mental development
occurs in-between the ages of 10 to 19. Accordingly, maintaining a
proper nutrition standards at that stage is essential.
Redress for flood hit farmers

The Agriculture Ministry is making arrangements to assist farmers
whose rice crop were destroyed in the recent floods. They will be
provided with free seed paddy, Ministry officials said. Under this
program, the ministry has started giving 400 bushels of seed paddy for
the Matara district and 600 bushels for the Galle district to affected
farmers.
Buddhist talk in English
Asoka Devendra, will deliver a Buddhist Talk in English, on 'Some
insights into the process of re-becoming' at a meeting of the Servants
of the Buddha Society, Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya tomorrow
at 4.30 p.m.
Manaqib Thamam
Aboosalih Thakkiya, Mohideen Maskid Road, Panchikawatte will conduct
the 40th Annual Manaqib Thamam on June 6 at 9.00 a.m. Sheik Fathhulla P.
Muthukoya Thangal will also participate.

Wimal to be felicitated
Housing and Construction Minister Wimal Weerawansa will be
felicitated by his Alma Mater Tissa Central College - National School
today at 10 a.m. at the College assembly hall organized by the school's
Old Boys Association.
It will be held under the patronage of Principal Wilfred Weerasinghe.
Josephian Walk
Josephian walk 2010 will be held on July 18 at 12 noon at the College
premises.
The entire proceeds of the Walk and the evening musical fantasia will
be for the indoor nets, new library and Fine Arts Centre Project.
Inter school art competition

An inter school art competition will be held in the Central Province
on June 10 to promote moral and spiritual values among the student
population.
More than 500,000 students attached to 1,474 schools will be eligible
to participate in this competition held in 13 categories to suit
students from grade one to 13, Central Province Governor Tikiri
Kobbekaduwa said.
Two Lankans die in Saudi crash
Rasika SOMARATHNA
Two Expatriate Sri Lankan workers died in a road accident in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia yesterday morning.
Several other Lankan's too sustained injuries as the vehicle they
were travelling went off the road as the driver had lost control.
The deceased migrant workers have been identified as residents of
Mannar and Batticaloa.
Japan helps IDPs
The Japanese Government will provide 100 million Japanese Yen (1.1
million US dollars) through the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) and
returnees in the North and East.
Japan has contributed 40 million US dollars since 2009 to support
Government's humanitarian activities.
Chain snatcher nabbed
Panadura Group Corr.
A youth who robbed a gold chain of a pregnant mother at the Wadduwa
Central Road junction was arrested by the public on Tuesday.
The suspect was to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate. |
