Met Department predicts thundershowers

The Meteorology Department said thundershowers will be experienced in several places over the Southwestern coast during the morning. It will develop to the North Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces in the afternoon today. Meteorology Department Duty Forecaster Gayana Hendawitharana said as pre-monsoonal rains continue thundershowers could be expected in several parts of the country.

Heavy rainfall will be experienced in the Southwestern coastal areas in Colombo, Ratmalana, Maharagama, Nugegoda, Rajagiriya and Kalutara in the morning. The thundershower will develop to several places in the North Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces in the afternoon or evening.

Morning showers will be experienced in the Southwestern coastal areas until 2.00pm, later it will move to the North Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces, she added.

"We are expecting this condition this week. Yet, it is not the time to expect the Southwest monsoonal rains," Hendawitharana told the Daily News.

However, she said there will not be strong winds along with thundershower. Therefore, there was no flood threat.

The public were requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by the lightning.
