Hard fought victory for Rajans

Dharmaraja College, Kandy scored a hard fought 4-3 win over Sri Sumangala College, Kandy in their Kandy District schools Boys Under 19 Hockey Tournament match played at the University Grounds. Peradeniya yesterday. At half time Rajans led 2-1.

First ten minutes of play did not produce any scoring before centre forward S. Mallikarachchi opened the scoring for Sri Sumangala through a well calculated shot which found its target.

But the Rajans hit back before the breather through centre half Harsha Godage who slammed two quick goals. Soon after resumption the Rajans forged further ahead through a good by left extreme Pubudu Ratnayake.

But Sri Sumangala's Centre forward S. Mallikarachchi who had an excellent game put the pressure on the Rajans when he reduced the lead to 2-3 with a neat goal.

Minutes later he obtained the equaliser when he punched holes in the opponents defence and sounded the boards.

In the closing stages of the game Dharmaraja's right half Rameel Dharmaratne scored the decider for the Rajans to clinch the issue.
