Suspect arrested

Two suspects in connection with stocking beef on Vesak Day were arrested by Galle Police. The suspects were arrested following a tip off received from the public and were to be produced before the Galle Magistrate.


Function to welcome Minister

Vidyartha College, Kandy will welcome old boy Sports Minister C. B. Ratnayake at a function hosted by the school at 9.30 am tomorrow.


Environment Day walk

The Central Environment Authority (CEA) with the Environment Ministry will organize an Environment Day Walk in Gampaha to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5.

The Walk will commence at 9 am at the Gampaha Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya with the participation of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Ministry Secretaries, the CEA Chairman and Director General. It will reach Bandarawatta Parakrama Vidyalaya in Gampaha. a Bio-diversity Exhibition will also be held at the Bandaranayaka Vidyalaya in Gampaha.


Badur Mowlood

Badur Mawlood recital will be conducted by M.A.M. Naeem (Muqddeem) and Al Haj Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) at the Nawala Jummah Mosque on June 3 after Magrib Prayers and will continue until Isha Prayers.

A Religious lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj N.M. Fardhy (Aroosi) after Isha Prayers at the Nawala Jummah Mosque on June 6.


Sermons and meditation

Ven Galigamuwe Gnanadeepa Thera will deliver sermons and a meditation program at the all Ceylon Buddhist Congress Hall, Bauddhaloka Mawatha on June 6, Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 pm.

Surprise raid nets errant coach drivers

Three private coach drivers were arrested by Panadura Police on Saturday for engaging in a scuffle on Galle road opposite the Panadura Police causing a public nuisance and obstructing the flow of traffic.

The arrest was made on a directive of SSP Sumith Edirisinghe who conducted a surprise raid. The three drivers G. Padmasiri, R. Dhammika Sri Lal and K. Champika Sri Lal were produced before the Panadura Acting Magistrate and released on bail.


Postal Museum to depict past glory

The Postal Department which caters to most of the communication needs of the people had been the communicator closest to the urban and rural dwellers from ancient times, said Posts and Telecommunications Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga. He said the Postal Museum would depict the past glory of the department and its past and present path.


Journalist Bandula Ariyatilaka dead

Lankadipa journalist Bandula Ariyatilaka , 59 died. Bandula was the husband of journalist Sheila Jayasundara of the Lankadipa Editorial.

He was also a school principal before becoming a journalist. The remains lie at 457, Heenkenda Road, Ragama. The cremation takes place at the Enderamulla crematorium at 4 p.m today.
