No interruption to water supply
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
There will be no interruption whatsoever to the drinking water supply
in the country although many areas went under water in the recent past.
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWS&DB) supplies clean
drinking water to the public and is ready to supply water in large
quantities for all special religious ceremonies during the Vesak
Festival, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.
Minister Gunawardena told a press briefing at his office yesterday
that the board is ready to supply water in bowsers and tanks for special
religious ceremonies countrywide during Vesak.
Minister Gunawardena said that in any emergency or for any
requirement people could dial the emergency number (1939) of the NWS&DB.
Four special teams have been sent to Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and
Galle to look into problems if any and provide immediate solutions.
Wells in rural areas will be cleaned in coordination with the Health
Ministry and local authorities. Arrangements have been made to clear the
drainage systems in flood affected areas. Public cooperation is needed
to carry out cleaning activities, the Minister said.
It is deplorable that the Opposition is accusing the Government for
no reason. The Government took immediate action to provide relief for
flood hit communities. The Opposition should study the climate change
and related subjects to improve their knowledge without coming out with
childish stories. Even well developed cities such as London and Paris
went under water last year due to natural disasters, Minister
Gunawardena said.
