Canadian Brigaders renew free The Cuban Five call
Cuba: The Canadian “Ernesto Che Guevara” Brigade of Solidarity with
Cuba renewed Monday their call of free The Five anti-terrorist Cuban
fighters held in US prisons during meeting with relatives of these
fighters.
At the meeting held at the Havana-based Friendship House, Olga
Salanueva, the wife of Rene Gonzalez, said that her husband and the rest
of the group have been held in US prisons for 12 years for warning their
country of subversive attacks from Miami.
She urged those present at the gathering to step up solidarity
efforts and international pressure to make justice for Gerardo
Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino and Fernando
Gonzalez.
In Hernandez’ particular case, she explained that the defence will
file a habeas corpus petition for justice to reconsider his situation.
Salanueva said that the writ of habeas corpus in favour of Hernandez,
condemned to a harsh double life plus 15 years-sentence, will be filed
before Judge Joan Lenard, of the Miami Federal Court, who sentenced them
in 2001.
The defense hopes his case to be reconsidered, as his sentence is the
result of a delayed, arbitrary and unjust trial.
