Oil leak at New Kelani Bridge:

Eight injured as fire guts houses

A crude oil leak has been reported near New Kelani bridge area yesterday.

Petroleum work gangs were excavating selected locations to locate the exact spot of the leak braving the heavy downpour.

Petroleum Ministry officials believed that the crude oil line from Sapugaskanda to Bloemendal oil storage complex has been slightly damaged and slight leak reported, Petroleum Ministry official said.

The official said it may take some time to detect the leak as there are four underground oil lines in the area” .

Meanwhile, eight people including a child were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital following burn injuries due to a fire breaking out near the oil leak.

The victims were residents in the New Kelani bridge area.

They said that the fire broke out due to the oil leak. Four houses out of fourteen were badly damaged by the fire.

The residents managed to bring the fire under control. The situation of victims are not serious.
