Time management

I refer to the editorial of the Daily News of May 12, in respect of the above subject, which is of vital importance to development.

Late to sign in, and early to sign out is a very common occurrence in most public institutions causing heavy losses to the Government, and also inconveniencing the public, thereby retarding the envisaged development of both public and private sectors.

Accordingly, the convincing power given to the Government at the recently concluded elections, should be made use of to put a stop to this situation, thereby introducing discipline prior to development.

Although many Sri Lankans were behave as above, those who work in foreign countries perform exceptionally well becoming assets to these countries. It confirms that the fault lies not with our people but with our system under which they continue to work and are allowed to function, with no supervision, which is most pathetic.

Rain havoc

(Page 1- May 15, 2010)

In the past few days with heavy rains everyone could witness the sad plight of the Colombo city to what an extent it has been neglected. Namely the poor condition of roads, drainage systems, sewerage, floods, garbage, unauthorized structures, road accidents including reckless diving. Seems no one had any interest or got anyone’s attention.

One thing that has improved is the number of automobiles on the roads. including containers, buses, three wheelers, motorbikes and cars. Our aim is to make Sri Lanka one of the best tourist destinations in Asia. It seems we are so far away from that target. We could pass the blame to CMC but finally it boils down to the Government.

We have all the resources and funds to uplift the Gampaha, North, East and rural areas but not the main city of Sri Lanka, Colombo. Probably it may due to passing of the responsibility to others. It should be responsibility of the Government to take the initiative and make Colombo City a place we can be proud of.

Greek debt crisis

Referring to your editorial (Daily News -May 17, 2010) it is time we gave credit to our own exchequer, the Governor of Central Bank and our President for managing our economy comparatively well despite having fewer commodities to trade with. Our inflation rate has to be among the best in the world or at least in Asia.
