Army edge out Police-10/8

Army scored a hard fought 10 points (one goal, one penalty) to 8 (one try and a penalty) win over Police Sports Club in their Caltex ‘A’ division League rugby encounter at Police Park yesterday. The winners led 7\3 at the breather.

Both teams won a lot of possession through ‘set pieces’ and line outs, but could not convert those into points due to lack of finish.

Police opened scoring when Harsha Wijeweera put over a penalty, but the soldiers hit back when winger Saliya Handapangoda and number eight Manoj Silva combined to send hooker Mahesh Silva over the line.

After the turn over Police reduced the lead off a push over try scored by prop Nishantha Welagedara which Wijeweera failed to add the extra points.

Army extended their lead through a penalty by Kapila Knowlton (10\8). During the dying stages of the game Police had a good opportunity to forge ahead through two penalties, but Harsha Wijeweera’s kicks went astray.

Referee D. Nimal.
