St. Joseph’s College, Maradana trounced Vidyartha College, Kandy by
49 points (4 goals, 3 tries, 2 penalties) to 18 (3 tries, 1 penalty) in
their schools under 19 division one segment B rugby tournament match
played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time the Josephians led 27-5.
The power play exerted by the Josephians was too much for the Kandy
school who simply succumbed under pressure.
But there was some unwarranted play in the match as both teams were
seen often going for the man. In one such incident Vidyartha’s flanker
A. Galahenna was sent on ‘sin bin’ by the referee to cool down the
situation.
But immediately after the match a free-for-all was prevented by the
presence of a large number of policemen in the grounds.
The bus carrying the Josephian ruggerites was given police protection
to prevent further incidents.
Try scorers for St. Joseph’s College were winger Piumal Jayasinghe
(two tries), lock forward Malintha Soysa (one try), flanker Suren
Fonseka (one try), flanker Isuru Perera (two tries) and full back Mayani
Sanjeewa (one try) who also goalled four tries and fired two penalties
to bring his tally to 19 points in the match.
For Vidyartha College flanker C. I. Bandara (two tries) and lock L.
T. B. Ratnadivakara (one try) scored while stand off K. G. N. Kumara put
over the penalty.
