Museum to depict ancient hydraulic civilization
UNESCO has pledged to provide technical assistance for establishing
an Irrigation and Water Resources Museum, which would depict the ancient
hydraulic civilization of Sri Lanka.

A delegation of UNESCO New Delhi had discussions with Irrigation and
Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva recently on
matters of bilateral interest. They pledged support for establishing the
Museum in response to the Minister’s proposal that an Irrigation and
Water Resources Museum be established in Sri Lanka. It will depict the
ancient hydraulic civilization of Sri Lanka which dates back to 2500
years, as there is a need to preserve the memories of this civilization
to learn lessons from it.
The delegation comprised UNESCO Office Director Armoogum Parsuramen
in New Delhi and UNESCO Representative for Bhutan, India, Maldives and
Sri Lanka, Secretary General, Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO
Prithi Perera, South Asia Regional Program Specialist for Dr. B.R.
Neupane, UNDAF Consultant for UNCESCO in Sri Lanka Sehan Ratnawale and
Director UNESCO officeExecutive Secretary in New Delhi and UNESCO
Representative for Bhutan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka M. Vaz. The
Minister was accompanied by Irrigation & Water Resources Management
Ministry Secretary Ivan de Silva.
Considering the importance of water security for sustainable
development of the country, it was agreed that the knowledge about water
management be shared among the key decision makers.
A Seminar will be organized on the role and contribution of
Parliamentarians to achieve this UNESCO with other UN Agencies will
arrange this event this year. This will be followed by a regional
seminar/ workshop for the parliamentarians.
An inter-sectoral meeting on water management will be organized to
find solutions to the critical water issues and also to share
information on new water management technologies. Regional water
managers, senior officers and water security promoters outside the
government sector will be involved in this event, which will be
organized with the support of UNESCO and other UN Agencies. |
