Wax scale warning in Katuneriya, Puttalam: Insect threatens plantations

Puttalam District Secretary M. Kingsley Fernando warned of the danger of an insect called ‘wax scale’ spreading in several districts.

How to destroy
* One litre of water mixed with a teaspoon of kerosene and washing powder

* Pesticide not required at first stage

This insect is harmful to horticulture and banana cultivation in Katuneriya and Wennappuwa in the Puttalam District.

This insect emits a liquid which affects banana plants.

Fernando said using pesticide is not required at the first stage.

The insect can be destroyed by sprinkling a mixture made of a teaspoon of kerosine oil, washing powder and a litre of water.

“However if the insect affects plantation to a greater extent, pesticide usage is essential,” he said.
