Please help Nethmini
Two and a half year old KW Tathsara Nethmini has profound hearing
loss in both ears. She needs Cochlear Implant surgery which costs
between Rs. 1.7 million and 2.8 million.
The surgery can be performed at the Golden Key Hospital - Rajagiriya
according to Resident Consultant ENT Surgeon Dr. Sobitha Attygalle
Abeyarathne.
The tentative date for surgery has been fixed for August 20.

Overstaying foreigners arrested
Twenty eight male foreigners overstaying in the country were arrested
from a lodge in Maligawatta yesterday. Twenty five were Indians and the
others Nepalese. Maradana police said the foreigners were aged between
21 and 35. They will be produced before Maligakanda Magistrate Courts
today.
Investigations are continuing under the supervision of I.P.

Bana at Gangaramaya
A Bana ceremony organized by Elrond Foundation in memory of dead and
wounded soldiers and to mark the first year anniversary after ending the
war will be held at the Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo 2 May 16.
It will be headed by Ven. Katawala Hemaloka Thera of Gampaha.
Several soldiers will be present at the ceremony.
Meditation program
A meditation program conducted by Ven Kiribathgoda Gnanananda thera
will be held at the Kalutara Bodhi complex May 22 from 8 a.m.
Mark Vesak by desisting liquor, meat
The Lanka Knowledge Bank has planned to mark Vesak by launching a
countrywide program to ask people to desist from consumption of meat and
liquor during the Vesak week from May 24 to 30. The inaugural program
will be launched from the Sri Jayewardenerama Viharaya, Borella on May
24, said Lanka Knowledge Bank Chairman Anura C. Perera.
Regi Siriwardena Memorial Lecture
Prof. Ranjini Obeyesekera, Anthropology Department, Princeton
University (retired) will deliver the Regi Siriwardena Memorial Lecture
to commemorate Siriwardena’s 88th birth anniversary at the ICES
Auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 May 15 at 5.30 p.m. The title
of her lecture is “Translations: The Art of Attempting the Impossible.”
Siriwardena has been a teacher, journalist, literary and film critic,
scriptwriter, translator, poet, playwright and fiction writer.
He served as International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) Editor
for 15 years. His publications include Poems and Selected Translations
(1993), Octet: Collected Plays (1995), The Lost Lenor (1996), Among my
Souvenirs (1997), The Pure Water of Poetry (1999), and The Protean Life
of Language (2001). He died on December 15, 2004.
Felicitation of Marist Brothers
The Old Boys’ Union of Holy Cross College Colombo Branch, Kalutara
will be felicitating the community of Marist Brothers who served as
Administrators and Teachers of the College from 1978 to 2009. The
ceremony and lunch will be held at Samudra Hotel of the Sri Lanka
Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, 78 Galle Road, Colombo 3.
The ceremony will begin at 11.00 am on May 10.

A lecture on ‘Thorium fuel cycle for clean energy and its relevance
to Sri Lanka’ by Prof. G.S. Murthy, School of Chemistry Former Director
and Nuclear Techniques Centre Coordinator will be held at the Institute
of Engineers, Sri Lanka May 7 at 4.00 p.m.
Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India, and the Institute of
Engineers, Sri Lanka are organizing the event. All are welcome.
Islamic finance conference
A one day session on Islamic Finance organized by Amana Global will
be held at Hotel Galadari on May 12 at 7 p.m. followed by dinner.
The main presenter will be Mufti Hassaan Kaleem, a renowned luminary
in the field of Islamic Finance.

Professor Karma Lekshe Tsomo will deliver a lecture on "Buddhist

Professor Karma Lekshe Tsomo is Associate Professor of Religious
Studies at the University of San Diego, USA and author of several books
including Into the Jaws of Yama: Buddhism, Bioethics, and Death and Out
of the Shadows: Socially Engaged Buddhist Women in the Global Community.
Media conference
A Media Conference for Galle district Media Persons organised by the
United Nations Information Centre, will be held at Aradana Hotel,
Richmond Hill Road, Galle May 13 from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Two Pirivena students drown
Two students aged 16 and 17, studying at a Pirivena in Dedigama were
drowned in the Kurugoda river yesterday. They were engaging in sand
mining to repair the Pirivena. Ten Pirivena students had been helping in
the construction of the Pirivena when the strategy struck. The bodies
have been recovered. Dedigama police are investigating. |
