UNESCO to start journalism school here

Dr Mervyn Silva

UNESCO is proposing to start a school of journalism in Sri Lanka to train international journalists, UNESCO officials told Media and Information and Highways Deputy Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva at his ministry yesterday.

UNESCO officials who met the Deputy Minister and discussed details of the project, said they had the resources and personnel to start it soon.

The Deputy Minister said a building to site the school of international journalism would be provided by the government. There was no difference whether the journalists were of private or public sector as they were like brothers of the same family, he said. UNESCO Director Arumugam Parshu Raman, UNESCO National Commission Sri Lanka Secretary R.P. Perera, Deputy Minister's Media Advisor Sarath Wickramasinghe and Information Assistant Director Hilmy Mohamed were present.
