Introduction of bio-methane for transportation in Sri Lanka is at the
threshold of success, Moratuwa University Chemical and Process
Engineering Department Senior Lecturer Dr. P.G. Rathnasiri said the
Daily News.

He said the research team has come up with new technology to produce
bio-methane from locally available bio-degradable resources. They have
tested it with a three wheeler about six months ago attaining successful
results.
A pilot project plant is being operated in the Moratuwa University
premises using the waste generated from the two student canteens and
water hyacinth from Bolgoda tank to produce the gas.
This gas is then purified to remove Carbon dioxide and is stored in
gas cylinders after compressing.
They are in the process of testing the system by using straw,
gliricidia and any other agricultural residues.
He said this gas can be also used for cooking purposes through the
gas cooker.
"In terms of the processed technology, this technology is highly
efficient compared to the existing technique" he said.
Prof. Ajith De Alwis and P.G. Joseph are also involved in carrying
out this research. |
