Development endeavours of the Govt:

Construction industry plays pivotal role

Construction Industry stakeholders should look forward with optimism to play a pivotal role in the development endeavours of the Government. With the construction industry being the prime driver of development it must shoulder greater responsibility in terms of producing cost effective construction of quality, the Chamber for Construction Industry said.

As the construction industry is largely dominated by the SME sector there is a need to design a scheme of assistance and build capacities of the SME sector. Development of a strong and healthy construction industry should receive the highest priority of the new Minister with the President specifically focusing his attention on “resurgence of the local construction industry” in his vision statement.

The President has attributed highest importance to provincial development which warrants accelerated development of construction industry stakeholders in the regions. The construction Industry in the regions has had limited participation since most of the projects have been carried out by those from outside the region. At this point one needs to examine capabilities of the regional constructors and take effective steps to build their capacities and upgrade the industry, the Chamber said.

The starting point for building capacities would be to create an accredited workforce which has undergone formal training in order to improve the quality of construction, productivity, and its delivery process. There is a need to create a knowledge based construction industry.
