Two arrested for abducting youth

Vavuniya Police arrested two persons on Monday who allegedly detained a youth illegally and demanded a ransom of Rs. 600,000 for his release.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said the suspects allegedly had kidnapped a 28 year old youth residing at Mannar Road, Vavuniya near the the Vavuniya Hospital on April 24. Police found him held in a house in the Poowarshakulam area.

The suspects were to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate yesterday.

Meanwhile the Nivithigala Police arrested two suspects who snatched a gold chain and a pendent from a woman proprietress of a shop at Pebotuwa in Nivitigala.

The value of the jewellery is around Rs 80,000. The snatch was made inside the shop.

A crowd of people however had given chase and nabbed the suspects before they could flee on their motorcycle. Police were able to recover the pendent.

The suspects were identified as residents of Sevanagala and Baduraliya. They were to be produced before the Magistrate yesterday.
