Karu wants election reforms implemented

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said that since there is no serious conflict between major political parties on the recommendations of the Parliament Select Committee on Election Reforms, steps should be taken to convince the smaller parties so that at least the next local Government elections could be held under the new system.

He made this observation when he called on the Mahanayakas of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters yesterday. The UNP Deputy Leader also said that his party would act as a responsible Opposition inside Parliament to strengthen democracy and uphold good governance.

In the same way they reached consensus to elect a Speaker, his party would extend its support to the Government on issues that could be agreed upon, he stated.
