Iraq can repeat memorable Asian Cup win, says Mahmoud
Iraq’s Asian Cup winning captain Younis Mahmoud believes the team are
capable of repeating their inspirational run to the title in 2007 during
next year’s tournament.
Against the odds, Iraq beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the final in Jakarta,
a feat seen as the war-torn country’s greatest footballing achievement.
The side of Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish players was able to briefly
unite the country’s bitterly divided communities in a rare moment of
jubilation, and Mahmoud says they can do it again.
``Most of the current national team players were part of the Asian
success in 2007. They all have further matured and are key performers in
various West Asian and European clubs,” he told the Asian Football
Confederation website.
``It’s an advantage that Qatar is hosting the next edition of the
Asian Cup. Many of the current Iraqi internationals have either played
or are currently playing with the Qatari clubs.
``We’re used to the weather and pitches, and that’ll give us the
edge,” added Mahmoud, who plays for Al Gharafa in the Qatar League.
Iraq’s fairytale run in 2007 is still vivid in his mind.
``The memories will linger in my mind forever. Nobody expected us to
win the title then,” he said.
``But we played with true spirit. Our nation was united to encourage
us all the way.
The sectarian violence stopped and it was undoubtedly the highlight
of all.
``It was a historic win. Our nation needs another title and we know
how much it means to the people back home.”
But it will be a tough ask to match their achivements from three
years ago, with little going right since that inspirational day,
culminating in FIFA suspending them over political interference in the
sport last November.
The ban was lifted last month but Iraq have had little chance to play
international football.
