Motor cyclist kills 95 year

Rupiah Sandanam lived 95 years and was able to walk about. Yet she lives all those years to be killed by a hit and run motor cyclist last week, Chilaw police said.

Sandanam was crossing the Chilaw-Puttalam road near the Bangadeniya Post office when a motor cycle knocked her down. She was admitted to the Chilaw hospital with severe injuries and died after admission, police said.

Chilaw police are conducting investigations .


Protest delay trains

Residents of Kadugannawa held a public protest across the railway track last Friday after a temporary railway gate at the Kadugannawa level crossing was removed by the railway authorities.

A recent accident at the unprotected level crossing caused severe injuries to five persons travelling in a van when it hit a train on the level crossing.

Before the temporary gate was put up at the level crossing 11 accidents had taken place there.

Railway officials said a number of express trains leaving for Colombo in the morning were delayed due to protest demonstration. Railway officials said they were not aware why the temporary gate was removed.


Car hits lamp post:

Two dead, five injured

Two persons died and five were critically injured when the car they were travelling in hit a light post at Kawdana junction, Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that the car met with the accident around 1.30 p.m and the two died on admission to the Kalubowila Hospital.

The two deceased women were identified as Shaheela Bahu Basheer (22) of Wellampitiya and Hasheena Kalpani Thilakaratne (27) of Bloemendhal, Colombo 15. The car on its way towards Colombo from Mount Lavinia had collided against the island on the road and veered to its left striking light post and also a telephone post.

Five others who suffered injuries were admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital. Two of the injured persons were females and none of them was in a position to give a statement.

Dehiwela Police are investigating.


Avurudu Pola

Lanka Mahila Samiti will hold an Avurudu Pola on April 6, at its head office premises, No. 391, Thimbirigasyaya Road, Colombo 5. There will be household items, clothes, table linen, refreshments, pickles, sweetmeats and other avurudu goodies for sale at this Avurudu Pola which is scheduled to commence from 9 a.m.
