Menike wants holiday on April 9
The Centre for Monitoring Free and Fair Elections and Democratic
Rights (MENIKE) urges the Government to declare April 9, the day after
the general election a holiday.
Menike Chairman Attorney-at-Law Chandrasiri de Silva points out that
there are nearly a million workers in urban centers such as Colombo,
Gampaha, Kalutara etc. who belong to the category of migrant workers.
They have come from distant places like Moneragala, Ampara, Anuradhapura,
Badulla.
The period of leave given to them is not sufficiently long enough for
them to return to their work places after casting the vote, April 9
being a working day. These workers would not go to their long
destinations, if they had to come back just for one day. After the 9th
is the weekend which is followed by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The
workers would opt to go home for the New Year straight.
One may remember the last Presidential Election, which was also held
on a Thursday. MENIKE appealed to all authorities concerned and the
following Friday was declared a holiday. Reports on media indicated that
there was an unprecedented movement of people going to distant areas.
This definitely brought in an additional one million of voters to the
polling stations.
