Begging banned in trains

Begging will be banned inside trains from today (1), the Railways Department said.

Sri Lanka Railways' Commercial Superintendent Wijaya Samarasinghe said that begging and soliciting money have become a common practice in trains making it a major hassle to commuters.

It is reported that those who beg in trains are mostly pickpockets and chain snatchers preying on commuters.

He said that many violent incidents too have been reported due to beggars turning aggressive inside trains placing passengers at risk.

Sometimes, the beggars' behaviour is a threat to public security as well as their conduct is sometimes suspicious endangering commuters.
