The Southern Province has been brought under an accelerated
development drive. The younger generation should be prepared to face
development challenges in the future, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa
in Suriyawewa Tuesday.
“We have a responsibility to rebuild the country under a stable
Government after terrorism was eradicated,” he said.
President Rajapaksa was addressing SLFP activists in Bandagiriya at
the Suriyawewa Town Hall. He added that some political parties have
betrayed their policies to various international forces and have
forgotten their leaders too. President Rajapaksa said the country does
not need politics based on petty and narrow policies.
“The people demand a viable mechanism through which this country
could be built after the scourge of terrorism was wiped from the
country,” he added.
President said the people in Tissamaharama are fortunate as they get
an international airport and a harbour soon. He added that the number of
projects were implemented to provide water to the people in the area and
a project will be implemented to ensure water facilities to the rest of
the people from Uma Oya, Mau Ara and Walawe river.
He said the people have given him a mandate with a clear majority of
1.8 votes to rebuild the country.
The President said an international cricket tournament would be held
at the Suriyawewa international cricket stadium by July this year, The
study courses in Technical Colleges need to be upgraded and district
branches of the National Youth Services Council should be established
for the benefit of posterity. President Rajapaksa added that the younger
generation should have indepth knowledge on IT.
He added that industrial parks are being built in areas adjacent to
the Hambantota Harbour.
A road network with four lanes is being constructed in the Suriyawewa
area.
The President said over 28 investors have signed agreements with the
Government to commence industrial projects in the Hambantota district.
