Basnahira South build up good lead

Two fighting half centuries from wicket keeper batsman Prasanna Jayawardena and all rounder Janaka Gunaratne helped Basnahira South build up a good first innings lead over Kandurata on the second day of their Bank of Ceylon Inter Provincial 4 day cricket tournament match which continued at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Jayawardena hit a top score of 84 with one six and ten boundaries while Gunaratne played a good supporting role during his solid 58 which contained three sixes and five boundaries.

The pair were also associated in a sixth wicket stand of 109 runs that enabled Basnahira South reach an impressive 300 in reply to Kandurata’s first innings total of 179 all out.

Basnahira South then made early inroads into the Kandurata batting in the second innings with spinner Dinuk Hettiarachchi striking two vital blows during the latter stages.

Basnahira South: 300 (Y. de Silva 36, G. Rupasinghe 20, C. Silva 21, P. Jayawardena 84, J. Gunaratne 58, M. Bandara 29, R. Perera 19, C. Vidanapathirana 2 for 82, A. Ganegama 2 for 44, S. Randiv 2 for 95, K. Weeraratne 3 for 37).

Chamdimal 93 not out

Former Sri Lanka Under 19 captain Dinesh Chandimal hit a sparkling 93 not out as Ruhuna set about chasing Basnahira South’s massive first innings total of 538 for 9 on the second day of their Bank of Ceylon Inter Provincial 4 day cricket tournament match which continued a the Galle International Stadium yesterday.

Chandimal was in cracking form as he hoisted three sixes and struck nine boundaries during his 79 ball innings as Ruhuna reached a commanding 140 for 2 in their first innings.

Earlier wicket keeper batsman Kaushal Silva became the third centurion for Basnahira North with a splendid 108 from 242 deliveries which included only four boundaries.
