The day's theme was 'Radio plays and teledrama - then and now.' "I believe the relationship of children, media and education can be considered from two perspectives: the formation of children by the media; and the formation of children to respond appropriately to the media. A kind of reciprocity emerges which points to the responsibilities of the media as an industry and the need for active and critical participation of readers, viewers and listeners.

With this framework, training in the proper use of media is essential for the cultural, moral and spiritual development of the children," reads a message from Niroshanie Mallawarachchi, teacher-in-charge of the English Section of Devi Media Unit.

Principal W.D.P.K. Samarasinghe drew attention to the days before the advent of television when radio plays kindled imagination of listeners. "Script writers must be well-read to stretch the imagination of listeners by voices," said Geetha Kanthi Jayakody while being interviewed by the Devi Media Unit. Jayantha Chandrasiri too was interviewed and brought to the notice of the audience that eight million viewers watch television daily and thus the scope for teledrama. He also expressed his view that children must be given leisure time to make them thinkers. Nalaka Swarnathilaka drew attention to the fact that not a single serialised children's tele drama is being telecast at present. The event was livened by the presentation of six tele drama songs, trained by the school's Eastern Music teacher Shiromi Weerasinghe.
