Focusing on the Eastern literary landscape
Lately
many literary magazines in Thamil are being published in many parts of
the country. But their standards vary.
Writers and readers of serious writing in Thamil in Lanka cannot
depend only on the newspaper magazine pages since they have limited
space to accommodate all that is produced.
Most of the writers seem to write doggerel in the name of 'poetry'
and a few write short stories which again sacrifice the art of writing
short stories. However, exceptionally some fine writings have also been
created in the different genres of creative writing.
Good many write non-creative writing in the form of articles and
prose writing.
There is a conscious effort to have a Lankan Thamil identity to
distinguish from the writing produced in Thamilnadu. Social
consciousness and near-realism mark the signpost for Lankan Thamil
Identity.
Senkathir (Red Rays) edited by Senkathiron (T.Gopalakrishnan)at 19,
Upstair Roadm, Maddakakalppu (Batticaloa) is a little magazine that
encourages writers from the east of Lanka. Most of the literary people
in this part of the country had not been widely known in other Thamil
speaking areas.
The current issue of Senkathir documents the contributions that a
Catholic priest Rev Dr S A I Mathew has rendered to the people at large
towards education and social development in the East in particular. A
retired Principal from Maddakkalappu, Thuraiyoor K. Sellathurai has
written this piece. He has gathered a lot of information hitherto
unknown of the educationist. There are short stories and poems from
senior and young writers from all parts of the country. A new feature on
senior writers has been started. This columnist happens to be the
magazine's first focus. Interesting articles and continuation of
articles on different subjects from the earlier issues are also
included.
Readers in other parts of the country wishing to know the literary
activities of the people in the Maddakkalappu region could gather a lot
of information from this journal, if you can read Thamil.
