Seetha Devi stickers return with trophies

Seetha Devi Sports Club, Kandy, became the first ladies hockey team to return to the island with a trophy in a tournament where hockey clubs from many countries participated when they became runners up at the Singapore Womens Sixes in the six a side hockey tournament organised by the Singapore Cricket club and played in Singapore recently.

In the cup finals Seetha Devi SC lost to Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club, Malaysia 0-4. According to the coach of Seetha Devi SC M. A. M. Ashroff in their second match Seetha Devi SC held Kuala Lumpur SC to a two all draw providing them with a tough opposition.

The Kuala Lumpur team realising that the Sri Lankan club was strong reinforced their team with three national stickers flown specially for the finals.

This was one of the contributor factors for their defeat.

Club teams from India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, England, Thailand and many other countries participated in this tournament.

In the first match Seetha Devi SC beat Hong Kong Cricket Club 1-0. Buddhika Gunaratne scored for Seetha Devi SC.

In the second match they were held to a two all draw by the ultimate champions Kuala Lumpur SC. Chathurika Wijesuriya scored both goals for Seetha Devi SC.

In the third match Seetha Devi SC were held to a one all draw by Cool Gals SC, Australia.

Maneesha Madhushani Dissanayake score for Seetha Devi SC.

The fourth match saw the hosts Singapore CC holding Seetha Devi SC to a one all draw.

Chathurika Wijesuriya scored for Seetha Devi SC.

In the quarter finals Seetha Devi SC trounced Hockey Goddess Club from Australia 3-0.

Centre forward Chathurika Wijesuriya who had an outstanding match slammed all three goals which was a hat-trick.

Seetha Devi SC having qualified to the Cup Semi finals put up a fine performance to oust Valley RFC from Hong King 2-0, Chathurika Wijesuriya and Maneesha Dissanayake scored a goal each for Seetha Devi SC.

In the cup finals KL Hockey Club, Malaysia beat Seetha Devi SC 4-0.
