SC directs Polls Chief :
Allow IDPs to use IDs, provide transport

The Supreme Court directed Elections Commissioner Dayananda
Dissanayake to allow IDPs use their identity cards and provide transport
for them to go to polling booths as done in the last Presidential
Election.
The Supreme Court Bench comprising Chief Justice Asoka de Silva,
Justice Jagath Balapatabendi and Justice Chandra Ekanayake made this
order following an application filed by the Center of Policy
Alternatives and its Executive Director Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu.
The petitioner has cited Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake,
Jaffna District Secretary K. Ganesh, Mullaitivu District Secretary
Emelda Sukumaran, Vavuniya District Secretary P.S.M. Charles, Kalmunai
District Secretary Rupavathi Ketheesvaran and the Attorney General as
respondents.
The Supreme Court also specifically mentioned to allow all remaining
IDPs in the North and the East to use the same identity cards and
provide same mode of transport for the April 8 election as provided at
the Presidential Election.
