Police find weapons hidden in thickets

Police have recovered weapons hidden in thickets in Vakarai and Serunuwara on Monday. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that the Batticaloa Police has seized two T-56 weapons, two magazines, 120 T 56 bullets and 98 MPMG bullets from the Kannadi area in Vakarai Police division while Serunuwara Police seized one SFG live hand grenade, 91 bullets of 7.62 type. Police are conducting further investigations.

Meanwhile another SFG hand grenade was seized by Nittambuwa Police in an Oya at Kamburagalla. It was diffused by the Army Bomb Disposal Squad. No suspects have been arrested.

The Mount Lavinia Police has arrested seven suspects in Indibedda, Moratuwa area wanted by the Moratumulla Police for causing damages to assets worth of Rs 12.975 million on January 5. Six boat engines, three vehicles, three trailors and a building were set on fire allegedly by the suspects.

They were arrested by a group of Police officers led by SI Kumara Nalawansa of the Moratuwa Police. They would be handed over to Moratumulla Police for further investigation.

The Kalutara North Police arrested a suspect from Galpatha allegedly removing cables worth Rs 139,000 from a communication tower at Galpatha belonging to a private phone company on Sunday. Police are conducting investigation. Aluthgama Police arrested three suspects with a three-wheeler near the Algama Police Station.

The three have allegedly hijacked the three-wheeler near the Ambagaha junction on Monday. Two persons died when a private bus collided head on with a three-wheeler at the Simmons Road, Maradana on Monday evening. Four in the three-wheeler suffered injuries and two died at the Colombo National Hospital on admission. The two victims were identified as Kumuditha Madumadawa (18) of Tewatta Road, Ragama and Suresh Rangana Jayathilake (26) of Pamunuwatta, Mirigama.
