Differences between the Kandy District UNP Organizer and the party
leadership over candidates have deepened. Earlier the UNP decided to
field only one Tamil candidate, S. Rajaratnam. But reports said the
party leadership had decided to field both former Parliamentarians
Rajaratnan and Mano Ganeshan. Further two Tamil candidates are to
contest under the UPFA ticket. The UNP also fielded former CWC National
Organizer R. Yogarajan in the Nuwera Eliya District.
Pelmadulla Estate workers went on a strike demanding the arrest of
two persons who had forcefully taken two coconuts from boys who were on
their way home.
The two were said to be under the influence of liquor. The boys were
from the Neelagama Estate.
Prayers have commenced at the Chavakachcheri Jumma Mosque again. This
mosque was closed from 1990 to 2002 and again from 2006 due to war. A
team of philanthropists visited Chavakachcheri recently and undertook
repairs. As such prayers are being conducted at the Mohideed Jumma
Mosque.
Former TNA Parliamentarian Sivajilingam said the people of the North,
East and diaspora understood the true face of the Tamil National
Alliance.
Steps have been taken to operate six schools in the Valikamam North
High Security Zone. These schools were functioning outside the Zone
since 1990. The people of the area have requested the Jaffna Government
Agent to seek the assistance of international donors to assess damages
and rebuild them.
All Ceylon Tamil Congress Secretary Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has met
the Jaffna University Student Federation. It was reported that this
meeting took place with a view to form a new party.
