Promotions for railway employees
Irangika Range
Four hundred and thirty five employees of the Sri Lanka Railways were
promoted for the first time after a lapse of 15 years.
Addressing the ceremony of presenting promotion letters to the 93
posts of the Railway Department in Colombo recently, Transport Minister
Dullas Alahapperuma said the Railway employees fulfill their duties with
maximum dedication.
He said these appointments have been made after the lapse of 15
years, promotions of employees were held in abeyance due to various
reasons.
He said many employees who were entitled for promotions in terms of
the service constitution had retired from services without obtaining
their promotions.
The situation has now been changed and the issues relating to
employees’ promotions have been resolved with the formulation of a
proper strategy by the authorities. The Minister said he has been able
to fulfill the request of the railway trade unions by preparing the
service constitution which was not taken up by previous regimes.
The Minister said trade unions of the Sri Lanka Railways always
worked with proper coordination and understanding with the political
authorities to win their rights. With the human and physical resources
improvement in the Department, a giant leap towards development of the
Sri Lanka Railways can be expected with the commencement of railway
journeys to Jaffna on the Northern line and to Beliatta on the Southern
railway line by 2012.
