The second edition of Marutaya Wasanthaya, a biography written on Sri Lanka's legendary musician Victor Rathnayake was launched at John de Silva on February 18 to coincide with his 68th birth day.

The book was authored by Geethanath Kudaligama. Parallel to the book launch Madu Vasanthe, a CD which includes Victor's new songs was also released.

Professor Sunil Ariyarathna delivering the key note of address dubbed Victor as one of the best melody composers bestowed to Sri Lankan music.

"When Pandit Amaradewa entered the field Victor was a child of five years. When Nanada Malini entered the field Victor was an unknown musician. According to Victor they portrayed role models for him. Victor's intuition was exceptional. That is why he stood as a colossal among the other musicians. He was praised as a singer in every possible way but from my point of view the extent he was appreciated as a melody composer is not enough. His ability of composing melodies resulted in setting stage for many singers who now enjoy a considerable place in the field. Sunil Edirisinghe sets the ideal example for that. Victor's contribution as a singer equates with the role he played as a melody composer," Professor Ariyarathne explained.

Kumariyaka Pa Salaba Saluna, Sadakada Pahana, Pthune Akurata Pamawe and other songs were successfully turned into melodies by Victor to suit Sri Lankan taste. This exercise rendered by Victor unfolded an opportunity for the Sri Lankan song lover to experience a different flavor of music.

Amidst the celebrations Ratnayake transported the audience back to 1970s with his mesmerizing voice by singing some of the new songs which are included in the Madu Vasanthe.
