Hasini intertwines thoughts with verses

A flower should blossom if the butterfly is to enjoy the taste of its nectar. Likewise a poet or a writer should embrace the society with the works she or he has already done if he or she wishes to entertain others.

Hasini Haputhanthri is one of the promising figures in the section of poetry who is striving to bloom as a prolific poet. She, still a budding poet, was invited to Galle Literary Festival held recently in Galle to be introduced to the Sri Lankan literary fans.

Hasini Haputhanthri

Hasini was a happy girl for giving the podium in GLF to reveal the muse simmering within her. Speaking to the Daily News she proved that hers is a mind suggestive of ideas and opinions.

"We chose poetry as a medium of expression from long time. With a sort of busy life still poetry appears the only way of expression as you can write what comes to your mind. Writing poetry doesn't matter where you are in. The place may be in a bus or somewhere you can write down some lines," opined Hasini.

Hasini, introduced in GLF as an unpublished writer emphasized that she will not remain so.

"I don't want to remain unpublished. We, writers need publishing. We are writing for the society. For me Sri Lanka is relatively easy to get published. I don't like to depend on good editing but I firmly believe in quality writing. If the equality writing is to materialize young writers need a good editorial feedback. Due to the lack of good feedback the young writes are given a less space to involve in. Actually writing is not an individual thing," she said adding somewhat disappointment to her voice.

One of her worries is the inactivity of Sri Lankan Arts Councils compared to the arts councils in other countries. If poetry, novels and other arts are to resurrect Hasini sees a vivid solution in crafting a national policy on literature rather than blowing the trumpet over what the authorities have already done.

Her sociological aspect

Hasini trained as a sociologist is now seeking the potential to justify women activism in Sri Lanka. As a prelude to the discussion on women activism in Sri Lankan Hasini went on to point out some of the active figures such as Vivian Gunawardene who took the vanguard in the Sri Lankan left movement in 1930-1940s.

It is not clandestine to say artists especially writers exploit the social conditions as a source to treat their works. So advertently or inadvertently Hasini revealed that the objective of researching women activism is to write a novel.

"There are a lot of dimensions to explore women activism. As a writer I would like to write in the perspective of a woman," she said in a tone full of gusto.

Her future plans

Messianic she is, now planning for an International Cultural Festival in Sigiriya.

"I work in a cultural and social background. I want a dialogue in a democratic space. We need to discuss literature in a wider perspective. This will be a good platform for all literary loving people," she noted.

Hasini is not yet sure when will the International Cultural festival would take place. She said that it will be held in a possible day.
