All have to obey country's law

Narrow sighted opportunistic political parties are trying to highlight the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka as a uncommon incident, artistes said yesterday.

The artistes told a media conference that the incident was normal as anyone is bound to obey the country's law. General Fonseka had been taken into custody by Military Police in connection with his statements and conduct during the recent past and he is also under the law of the country, they said.

The artistes questioned how this incident could be strange.

"The person who contested to become the President of the country should have known the civil law and the Army Law. If he knew either the army law or the civil law he would obey it and an outcry of this nature would not have occurred," Somaratna Dissanayake said.

Rohana Weerasinghe said certain people are trying political gains from this incident.

"The intelligent people should understand the real situation. These people who are politically motivated are trying to tarnish the victory achieved by defeating the LTTE," he said.

"No one had the rights to destroy the peaceful situation prevailing in the country. They are trying to destroy the unique quality of gratitude of the people. Those are the cultural values of our nation we had protected. Therefore everyone is duty bound to safeguard those cultural values," Sriyantha Mendis said.

Renuka Balasooriya pointed out that certain political parties have attempted to devalue the dignity of the war heroes.
