Opposition making empty slogans -Vasu

Vasudeva Nanayakkara

The opposition political parties and some groups were making empty slogans against the results of the Presidential elections. Such things were not needed in a democratic system and if they had any substance to support their claims they should collect valid information and recourse to legal steps, Democratic Leftist Front Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara said.

He was addressing a press conference the Socialist Alliance held at the Dr. N.M. Perera Centre, Borella to explain the future plans of the alliance in the forthcoming parliamentary election. However, the presidential election result was a resounding victory and cannot be challenged because it was conducted according to the proper norms of the election law and the physical counting vote was also done properly according to law he said. The retired General-JVP coalition seemed to be moving towards a suspicious direction worse than the dictatorial direction taken by the governments especially after 1978. It was going to create problems for the democratic system of government, he noted.

A General Election is a vibrant function of democracy and we all should protect it, Nanayakkara noted.

LSSP leader Prof Tissa Vitarana said the UPFA government was able to implement rural development policies and also save the economy from experiencing a rebound of the global economic downturn. The non-aligned foreign policy adopted by the government has also helped the country.
