The British Council held their very unique Futsal quiz challenge at
the Ceylon Intercontinental Hotel. Seventeen teams with five Futsal
players participated in the quiz. The first round saw Gateway College,
Colombo International School (CIS), S Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia,
Gateway Kandy on top scoring 30 points each. While Nalanda, Elizabeth
Moir, St. Benedict's, Asian International, Royal and Wycherly followed
with 20 points each.

The second round the actual football round required any one of the
footballers from a team to shoot a goal in order to answer a question.
The first player to shoot the goal was awarded the question. If
either the goal was not kicked into the goalpost or if the answer was
wrong? the teams received negative points.
In this round, Asian International School moved up from eighth place
to second place and almost beat CIS. However, one miss at the goal by
Captain Yahren Tissera resulted in ten negative points which he made up
for with two good shots and two correct answers. At the end of this
round there were several tie breakers for the seventh and eighth places
as only eight teams went to go through to the Futsal tournament.
Nalanda, Wycherely, Moir, ST. Benedict's and Mahanama fought for a
place in the Futsal tournament 2010. Mahanama College was the team that
was knocked out.
At the end of the third round the CIS team held on to their ten point
lead while AIS came a close second followed by Gateway, Wycherely, S
Thomas, St Benedict's, Nalanda, and Moir. All these eight brainy teams
clashed in the Futsal at Austasia yesterday. St. Benedict's who made it
to the tournament with a hair's breadth, managed to easily win the
tournament beating S. Thomas' Mount Lavinia in the final. S Thomas' beat
Nalanda College to enter the final, while St. Benedict's beat Colombo
International School to get into the final. The only match that went up
to two tie breakers was the first match between St. Benedict's and Asian
International - novices to football. St. Benedict's College is the All
Island Schools football champions for the last five years.
It is no wonder that they won a tour to the UK sponsored by Emirates
and the British Council by remaining the unbeaten champions in the
Futsal Challenge organized by the British Council, Sri Lanka. |
