Arms cache found in Alanchipotha

Police on Wednesday unearthed a stock of arms and ammunition left
behind by LTTE cadres in Alanchipotha, Welikanda.
Police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said acting on information a
special team from Welikanda police launched a search operation and
uncovered a haul of arms and ammunition in the Alanchipotha area at
around 5.00am.
“The arms cache was buried by fleeing LTTE cadres inside a sanctuary
located 15km away from Mahaweli river,” he added.
The police team unearthed four T56 assault rifles, parts of two T56
rifles, three 60mm mortar bombs, a 60mm mortar weapon, three 81mm mortar
bombs, eight RPG bombs, two pressure mines, five drums used for the LMG
weapon, two walkie talkies chargers, four parts of walkie talkies, a
remote control device, a five-foot dead code wire, 170 of 12.7mm anti
aircraft ammunition, 687 MPMG ammunition, 1,248 T56 ammunition and a
claymore mine. |
