India, Maldives to sign anti-terror agreement
India and the Maldives have agreed to sign an agreement on
anti-terror measures and information sharing by April, reported the
local daily The Times of India on Thursday.
Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram and his Maldives counterpart
Mohammad Shihab reached the agreement during their meeting in Indian
capital on Wednesday, the daily quoted sources from the Home Ministry as
saying.
The daily said that Indian officials were worried about the replay by
terrorists of a coup attempt in 1988 when a band of 60 mercenaries tried
to take control of the Maldives.
The coup attempt, which was supported by the LTTE was thwarted by
Indian paratroopers and naval warships. Xinhua
