Tharanga, Nuwan star in victory
Opener Tharanga Paranavithana hit a sparkling half century and seamer
Nuwan Pradeep captured four wickets as the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team defeated
the touring Afghanistan national team by 34 runs in their 50 overs
cricket encounter worked off at the P. Saravanamuttu Oval yesterday.
Paranavithana hammered 77 with one six and eight boundaries as the
home side piled up a massive 314 for 7 from their 50 overs. Former Sri
Lanka all rounder Farveez Maharoof also hit an unbeaten 40 from just 21
balls inclusive of three sixes and one boundary.
Afghanistan in reply finished on 280 for 9 with middle order bataman
Mohammad Shahzad hitting a top score of 80 from 72 deliveries with the
help of four sixes and five boundaries. The two teams will now join
Canada and Ireland in a Four Nation Twenty20 tournament which begins on
February 1 at the P. Saravanamuttu Oval.
