One dead, six injured in accident

At least one person was killed and six others injured in a road accident on Wednesday evening at Upathissa Mawatha junction, Walgama. Police spokesman SSP I. M. Karunaratne said a van plying from Matara to Colombo collided with a private bus plying on the opposite side at Upathissa Mawatha junction at around 4.40 p.m. He said the accident occurred when the van was attempting to overtake a three-wheeler and crashed with the bus travelling on the opposite side. “The driver of the van was killed on the spot,” he added.

Four persons in the van and two passengers in the bus who were injured were admitted to the Matara hospital.


Prayers, lectures

The prayers and lectures program will commence on January 31. Rathibathul Jalaliya by Moulavi A. B. M. Mubarak (Falahi) and Moulavi M. N. M. Farohy (Aroosi). It will be conducted after Magrib Prayers and will continue till Isha Prayers. A religious lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj M. T. Hilurhdeen after Isha Prayers at Nawala Jummah Mosque.


Duruthu Perahera

The Kelaniya Rajamaha Vihara Annual Duruthu Perahera will be held today at 8.00 p.m.


Pirith ceremony

An all night pirith ceremony to mark the 62nd Independence Day Celebrations organized by the Religious Affairs Ministry will be held at the Independence Square on February 2 at 9.00 p.m.


Buddhist talk

Bhikkuni Kusuma will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in English on “Metta and the Noble Eightfold Path” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, January 30 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


CP to curb infections

The Central Provincial Health Ministry will launch an infectious diseases prevention program in the Central Province. The program will be implemented covering all divisional health service areas in the Matale, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Special attention will be paid to the dengue, malaria, rat-fever and swine-flu, officials said. So also a survey is conducting to identify the density of the mosquitoes. After that the fogging will be commenced to destroy this condition.


Men nabbed with wild fowl’s flesh

Two persons along with 750 Grams of wild fowl’s flesh were arrested by a team of wildlife officers attached to the Laggala Wilgamuwa Wildlife Conservation Office. They were produced before the Mahiyangana Magistrate Court and fined Rs 30,000 each.


Fine for breaking road rules

Nine persons who pleaded guilty for violation of road rules were fined Rs. 10,500 by Dambulla Magistrate and District Judge Maheshika Dhanansuriya.

Young men in Galewela and Dambulla areas were convicted for these offences. Galewela and Dambulla police led evidence.


Fire takes one

A mother of two was caught fire and killed when she attempted to light the hearth to cook meals at home in Deniyaya on Wednesday. The victim is identified as Kadappam Thilangam from the Beverly Estate, Deniyaya.


Men in masks rob hotel

Three armed men wearing masks had forcibly entered a hotel in Weligama owned by a foreigner and robbed a mobile phone and Rs. 7,000 cash after assaulting the caretaker. Weligama Police are investigating.


Cargills food city outlet open on Saturday

The Cargills Food city outlet at staples street which was temporarily closed following a minor fire due to an electrical short circuit would be opened for business on Saturday (30) its management states.
