President has fulfilled his tasks - Media Minister

The Presidential election results clearly indicates that the majority of people have understood that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has fulfilled the task entrusted to him during his first term in office, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

The Minister was addressing a press conference yesterday at the Media and Information Ministry, Colombo said the people have totally turned a deaf ear to rumours and fabrications of the Opposition.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has planned to develop the country during his next seven year period.

On the advice of the President moves are underway to place the country on a rapid development.

The people have acted wisely in voting for President Mahinda Rajapaksa and saving the country from a possible blood bath. Heeding the advice of the President, a peaceful atmosphere prevailed and no post election violence had been reported except for a few minor incidents. “Because President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been elected for a second term, a peaceful situation prevails throughout the country,” Minister Abeywardena said.

The UNP has lost many districts such as Badulla, Puttalam, Colombo and Kandy which were won by them at the 2005 Presidential election.

“The UNP could only win the districts which were on the Eelam map. These districts also come under the TNA agreement, he said.
