USA accepts UNASUR dialogue
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accepted the invitation of the
Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) to discuss security and defence-related
issues, according to the Ecuadorian Presidency.
The United States expressed its interest in direct talks with the
regional bloc through a letter addressed to President of Ecuador Rafael
Correa.
Previously, in compliance with an agreement of the last Summit of
South American countries, Correa had requested an exchange with Clinton
to get first hand information about the use of the US military bases in
Colombia.
It is UNASUR's view that guarantees given by the Government of Bogota
about not using the seven US military bases in Colombia against any
regional country also require a US commitment.
In a letter, Clinton agreed to take part in the dialogue on strategic
issues, mainly defence and security-related matters, which "may increase
mutual understanding, as well as contribute to identify areas of
potential cooperation."
"We would appreciate UNASUR officials to send us a list of issues to
be discussed.
This would facilitate coordination of the meeting between UNASUR and
the United States so as to develop a joint agenda for the talks, " a US
official said. Quito, Prensa Latina |
