UGC to get tough on ragging

The University Grants Commission has taken steps to totally eradicate the practice of ragging in Universities in keeping with the pledge given by the Mahinda Chinthana, vision for the future.

UGC Chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayake said the UGC will facilitate this by issuing a new circular which will simplify the implementation of the Prohibition of ragging and other acts of violence in Educational Institutions Act No. 20 of 1998.

He said page 73 of the 'Mahinda Chinthana vision for the future' has held out a pledge to totally eradicate ragging in universities.

As an initial step towards implementing this clause a national seminar will be held on the subject on February 27 jointly organised by the UGC and Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors.
