Unholy Opposition alliance a bunch of acute contradictions - DEW

The unholy alliance of in support of the Opposition candidate is a bunch of acute and unresolvable contradictions, said Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Minister and Communist Party (CPSL) General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekera.

The TNA which is for separation has joined hands with the JVP which opposes even the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, he added. Speaking to a packed Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna, the Minister further said that it was the JVP which first unleashed terrorism in this country. The UNP was the pioneer of State terrorism. The TNA was the proxy for LTTE terrorism. Terrorism had been a common feature of all three parties which dominate the unholy alliance that chose the ex-General as the Presidential candidate.

He added that the common factor that united all these dark forces of Reaction was their thirst for power to dislodge President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Their call for a change was a call for dictatorship, military rule, anarchy, return to terrorism and an end to democracy.

The nomination of Sarath Fonseka was foreign imposed, Gunasekera said.

Minister Gunasekera pointed out that the meeting at the Weeraingham Hall was a bridge between the North and South. After 28 years, since 1982, people from all districts are in a position to vote freely. The enforcement of the ID system in full force for the first time is a salutary feature with no impersonation possible. The unholy alliance of acute and unresolvable contradictions ranging from far Left to far Right. International factors deeply involved in the current Presidential Election. Imperialist intervention is quite evident and visible, he pointed out.

The CPSL General Secretary further said that Ranil Wickremesinghe did not want to field alternative candidate for the clear reason that in case of victory he would be the party leader according to the UNP Constitution. So, Ranil did not want to lose his leadership and that was why a so-called non-party ex-General was imported, he added.

“Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe the other day paid homage at the Nallur Temple. Did he confess his guilt and seek pardon before he sought the votes of the Northern people? He was a Cabinet Minister, responsible and culpable singly and collectively for the burning of the Jaffna library, massive fraud at the District Council election in 1981 and the bloody holocaust of Black July 1983. How can Sambandan join Ranil in seeking a vote for a military leader?, he asked.

Minister Gunasekera said that Mahinda Rajapaksa hails from the first anti-imperialist and anti-feudal family from the Hambatota District. The Rajapaksas have a proud history of anti-imperialist and anti-feudal struggles for the last 75 years. They fought against the caste system with the Communists and Sama Samajists in the South as well as in the North. Only few know that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was a member of Ceylon National Students’ Union right from his secondary education days.

He had never been a communalist or chauvinist. Therefore, it has become necessary to re-elect President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the benefit of the people and the country, he added.

Leaders of the LSSP, Democratic Left Front, EPDP, EPRLF and PLOTE attended the meeting.
