‘Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven’ at RCC

The film is based on the early stories by the outstanding Soviet writer Maxim Gorky.

There are several interwoven love lines in this beautiful, poetic drama: of the proud beauty Rada who bewitched the horse thief Loiko Zobar, of golden-haired Yulishka who was in love with Loiko, of noble Siladi, passionately enamored of Rada.

The action in the Gypsy camp is set against the background of lifestyle and traditions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s provincial outskirts – the late 19th-century Bessarabia.

‘Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven’ won awards like the Big Golden Shell at the San Sebastian IFF, 1976.

The drama will be screened at the Russian Center, Colombo, (RCC) on January 21 at 6 p.m. Entrance free.

Richie’s on the case

In a filthy, dank labyrinth of rooms below the streets of the East End, Sherlock Holmes was solving a case. That is, Robert Downey Jr., playing Holmes in the film ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ was engaged in hand-to-hand, foot-to-stomach combat with the villain (Robert Maillet). Both characters would end up knocked out on the floor, along with Holmes’s trusty sidekick, Dr. John Watson, played by Jude Law.

Lionel Wigram, who conceived the story based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters is also a producer of the film. He said that reinventing Holmes as an action hero made perfect sense. “I never agreed with the idea of the fairly stuffy Edwardian-type gentleman,” Wigram said. “It wasn’t my idea of Sherlock Holmes.”

The director is Guy Ritchie - the artist formerly known as Madonna’s husband. The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr. Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong and others. It was released worldwide in December.

Street in deep with Meyers

Meryl Streep plays the female lead in Nancy Meyers’ latest project ‘It’s Complicated’. With movies like ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ and ‘The Holiday’ to her name with Colombia Pictures, Meyers’ new film is a Universal production.

Streep plays the female in a romantic triangle with two men. Streep’s past movie ‘Mamma Mia!’ is said to have sparked the script of ‘It’s Complicated’. She next stars with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams in the John Patrick Shanley-directed ‘Doubt,’ and follows that by playing Julia Child in the Nora Ephron-directed ‘Julie and Julia’.

Streep also voiced a lead role in ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox, the stop-motion animation adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel. The movie took off on the screen recently.
